The Resume

    (October 29, 1962-August 16, 1980)
    Born in Dayton, Ohio
    Student at Michigan State University
Left a suicide note, entered the university’s steam tunnels and disappeared (August 15, 1979)
Returned to his family after contacting a private investigator and revealing his location (September 13, 1979)
    Died by self-inflicted gunshot (August 16, 1980)

Why he might be annoying:

After attempting to kill himself with an overdose of methaqualone, he hid at friends’ houses.
He then travelled to New Orleans and made another suicide attempt by swallowing cyanide.
While he was missing, a private investigator searching for him suggested that he had played a live-action version of ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ in the steam tunnels and gotten lost or injured.
The detective’s speculation was taken as a fact by the media leading to a moral panic over role playing games.

Why he might not be annoying:

He entered college at age sixteen.
He felt considerable parental pressure to overachieve.
After his death, his organs were donated for transplants.
He inspired an amusing-in-a-cheesy-way TV movie, ‘Mazes and Monsters,’ starring Tom Hanks (1982).
