Politician

The Resume

    (September 28, 1955- )
Became the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (December 2006)
Achieved a Bachelor of Arts (1977) and Master of Arts (1979) in political science from Université Laval
Political science teacher at Université de Montréal (1984-1996)
Elected to the House of Commons in a 1996 by-election (Saint-Laurent-Cartierville riding)

Why he might be annoying:

He loves the Canadian winter and hates when others complain about it (oh, shut up!).
He claims to have been cured of any sovereignist aspirations by rum and Coke in a federalist household.
He achieved Liberal leadership with less than 18% of the vote — on the fourth ballot!
After a successful tenure as Intergovernmental Affairs Minister under Jean Chretien, he was initially dropped from Paul Martin's cabinet.
His family purchased an Arctic husky they named Kyoto after the Liberals lost the 2006 federal election.
Although he holds French citizenship (from his mother's birthplace), he did not have a French passport or vote in any French (Europe) election.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a teenager, he often used his federalist father as a sounding board for his pro-sovereignty arguments.
He attributes his federalist convictions to the Meech Lake Accord, which he supported (and which failed, 1990).
He is not ashamed to admit having a big ego.
He received his doctorate in sociology in 1986, from the Institut d'etudes politiques in Paris.
He became the federal Environmental Minister in July 2004.
He opposes the death penalty but respects the fact that other jurisdictions have it.
He challenged the assertion made by the Parti quebecois, provincial government at the time (1998), that Canada's borders could be challenged but Quebec's could not.
When he was attacked by a cream pie-wielding activist in May 1999, he successfully pressed charges against his assailant.
He adopted a Peruvian child in 1989.
