He originally turned down his Oscar-winning role in 'The Last Picture Show' because there was cursing in it.
He made a point of thanking director Peter Bogdanovich's wife in his acceptance speech, even though Bogdanovich had left her during shooting for Cybill Shepherd.
He said in his acceptance speech that 'It couldn't have happened to a nicer fella.'

He was a ranch hand and rodeo performer before becoming an actor.
He won the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Team Roping Championship in 1953.
He accepted the role in 'The Last Picture Show' in gratitude to John Ford, who told him to take it.
