Vocalist

The Resume

    (January 10, 1918-April 30, 2015)
    Born in Paris, France
    Birth name was Henriette Ragon
Recorded 'Domino,' 'Voyage de Noces' 'Bal Chez Temporel' and 'La Chansonnette'
Appeared in the films 'French Cancan' and 'Napoleon'

Why she might be annoying:

She went by a pretentious single name.
Journalists dubbed her after the nightclub she and her husband ran (itself a variation of 'pate a choux' - French for cream puff dough).
She would snip the neckties of customers reluctant to join in with her singing and immediately staple them to the ceiling.
Eventually hundreds of neckties were hanging all over the nightclub (including those belonging to Thomas Dewey, Aly Khan and Errol Flynn).
The habit was so mutually understood in the press that when she made her American debut at the Waldorf Astoria, one review simply read: 'She snipped not a single tie.'
Her New York Times obituary read 'A Parisian chanteuse who built a reputation on an offbeat name, a penchant for guillotining men’s ties and the fact that she does not look, act or croon like Edith Piaf.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She was made Officier of the Legion d'honneur (January 1, 2009).
On Broadway, she was featured in the revues 'International Soiree' in 1958 and 'Folies Bergere' in 1964.
Before her singing career, she was a typist, a factory worker, a shoe saleswoman and an antique dealer.
Her son, Pierre Billon, had some success as a singer who wrote songs for Johnny Hallyday).
She was as a mentor to many younger vocalists, including Dalida.
From the beginning of the 1970s she toured Japan and Sweden where her 'L'eternal Parigot' song was popular.
She was seen as an everyman's version of Edith Piaf - earthy and amiably irreverent on stage as opposed to the ethereal Piaf.
