Why he might be annoying:

As a teen, he was involved in a series of petty thefts, mainly stealing beer.
He joked that he got in shape by running from the police.
With Dan O'Brien, he was part of Reebok's overhyped 'Dan and Dave' promotion.

Why he might not be annoying:

Although he was a Reebok endorser, he gladly wore the official Nike track uniform, commenting 'The important thing is the uniform has USA across the chest.'
He managed to win the bronze medal despite suffering a stress fracture in his left ankle during the first day's events.
He became a special education instructor at West Albany (Oregon) High School.
