The Resume

    (September 17, 1922-June 4, 2007)
    Born in Elba, Alabama
Sheriff of Dallas County, Alabama (1955-66)
Ordered an attack on civil rights marchers in Selma, Alabama, on 'Bloody Sunday' (March 7, 1965)

Why he might be annoying:

He used KKK members as irregular deputies.
He wore a 'Never' button on his uniform to show his opposition to black voter registration.
When he was accused of striking Rev. C. T. Vivian, he denied it, adding, 'One of the first things I ever learned was not to hit a nigger with your fist because his head is too hard.'
The year before his death, he told The Montgomery Advertiser about Selma, 'Basically, I'd do the same thing today if I had to do it all over again.'
He was convicted of conspiracy to import marijuana (1978).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served with the Army Air Force during World War II.
Public revulsion over Bloody Sunday prompted passage of the Voting Rights Act.
Civil rights activists chose Selma as a protest site because they expected Clark to overreact.
