The Resume

    (September 19, 1737-November 14, 1832)
    Born in Annapolis, Maryland
    Planter and politician
One of the richest men in colonial America
Known as Charles Carroll of Carrollton to distinguish him from his father, Charles Carroll of Annapolis
Delegate to the Second Continental Congress (1776-78)
    Signed the Declaration of Independence
    Maryland State Senator (1781-1800)
United States Senator from Maryland (1789-92)

Why he might be annoying:

He arrived at the Continental Congress too late to vote for independence, but got to sign the Declaration of Independence anyway.
When Maryland passed a law banning politicians from serving in the state and national legislatures at the same time, he resigned from the US Senate.
He claimed to favor abolition, but never freed his own slaves.

Why he might not be annoying:

At the time he signed a document declaring 'all men are created equal,' he was barred from holding office or voting in his native Maryland because he was a Roman Catholic.
After Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died (July 4, 1826), he became the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence.
He is mentioned in the state song 'Maryland, My Maryland.' ('Remember Carroll's sacred trust.')
