    Wrote 'What Did I Do? An Unauthorized Autobiography' (1992)

    He started as a jazz musician and attended Juilliard, where he met and became lifelong friends with Miles Davis.

    He spent six months in Africa making a travelogue with filmmaker Pierre Dominique Gasseau until they were arrested in Nigeria as suspected mercenaries (1968).
    He designed the sets and costumes for the New York Philharmonic's presentation of Stravinsky's 'Oedipus Rex.'
    New York Times art critic John Canaday wrote that he 'can do anything he wants with a brush.'
