Why he might be annoying:

He is called 'Buk' by his fans.
He is often wrongly classified as a Beat writer.
After publishing a few stories in his twenties, he abruptly stopped writing for ten years.
He was a heavy drinker and drug user.
He chose to live for many years as a derelict.
He is perhaps more famous for his colorful life than his writing.
Although he said his work was ‘93% autobiographical,' he may have exaggerated his poverty and substance abuse for effect.

He created the expression ‘Love is a dog from hell.'
He has a huge cult following.
He wrote movingly about life on the margins of society.
Jean Paul Sarte and Jean Genet allegedly thought he was America's greatest poet.
At 49, he walked away from his job as a mailman to focus on his writing.
Although no pretty boy, he had many girlfriends.
Despite his influence he is mostly ignored by academics.
Sean Penn offered to play him for free in ‘Barfly (1987).'
