    Set world records in 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, and 100-meter individual medley

Why he might be annoying:

    He gave up swimming for five months during his senior year of high school due to struggles with 'mental demons.'
    At college meets, he would write references to Bible verses on his face.
    His sleeve tattoo has spilled over onto his shoulder and chest.
    He said about his relationship with Michael Phelps, 'I texted him more than my wife at these Games.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    At the 2017 FINA World Championships, he became the second swimmer (after Michael Phelps in 2007) to win seven gold medals.
    He was the first person to win three gold medals at the FINA World Championships on the same day (July 29, 2017); he repeated the feat two years later at the next Championships (July 27, 2019).
    When he was unable to practice during the COVID-19 lockdown, he hiked 60 miles of the Appalachian Trail.
    On the podium, he carries a blue bandana that belonged to Claire McCool, his high school math teacher and mentor: 'She's with me every race and will be until I finish my career.'
    Rowdy Gaines called him 'the best swimmer on the planet, bar none.'
