Why he might be annoying:

    He was nicknamed ‘Deacon’ by his teammates, due to his standing in the Church of Latter-Day Saints.
    He broke his ankle on the team bus during the celebrations following the Pirates victory in the 1960 NLCS.
    He further aggravated his injury by tearing muscles in the back of his pitching shoulder during the 1960 World Series.
    He named his kids VaLynda, Varlin, Veldon and Veryl.
    He spent the early part of his career on mediocre Pirate teams.
    He was the ninth of his father’s ten children.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He spent his entire playing career with the Pirates.
    He served for the United States Army in World War II.
    He played the entirety of the 1960 World Series at a high level, which makes it even more impressive due to the fact he did it on a bum ankle.
    He recorded a career high 20 wins during the Pirates championship season (1960).
    Despite being a devout Mormon, he earned respect from teammates as he didn’t force his beliefs on others.
    He was considered a valued leader in the clubhouse, who wasn’t afraid to lead by example.
