Why they might be annoying:

Posters for their first tour, opening for the Damned, declared, 'The Adverts know one chord. The Damned know three. See all four at....'
Media focus on Gaye alienated the rest of the band.
Pickup quit the band by simply failing to show up for a scheduled concert.
Their second album tanked and the band broke up shortly after.

Why they might not be annoying:

Gaye Advert was the first female punk star.
They showed a self-depricating sense of humor in 'One Chord Wonders.' ('I wonder how we’ll answer when you say/We don't like you, go away/Come back when you've learned to play.')
Trouser Press called their debut album 'the equal of the first Sex Pistols or Clash LP, a statement that captures an exciting time.'
They broke up after the accidental death by electrocution of their manager, Michael Dempsey.
