Organization

The Resume

    (1928- )
The Society of the Muslim Brothers
Founded by Islamic teacher and Imam, Hassan Al-Banna
Headquartered in Cairo, Egypt (originally based in Ismailia, Egypt)
Pan-Islamic, religious, political, and social organization; has branches in Bahrain, Sudan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and parts of Northern/Eastern Africa
Began as a global revolutionary Sunni Islamic Movement to re-establish the Global Islamic State under Shariah Law
Led by Egyptian philosopher and journalist, Sayyid Qutb during the 1950s and 60s
As of 2015, led by imprisoned Egyptian insurgent Mohamed Badie (as of 2016); represented by Gehad al-Haddadd
Publicly called for the creation of an Islamic state, in 1938
After decades of Egyptian governmental suppression, attained political enfranchisement during the Egyptian Revolution, and subsequent deposing of President Hosni Mubarak (Jan. 2011)
Founded the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), chaired by Egyptian politician Mohamed Morsi (April, 2011)
Morsi elected the 5th President of Egypt (June 30, 2012); later ousted from power by military coup (July 3, 2013)
Creed: 'Allah is our goal; the Messenger is our guide; the Koran is our law; Jihad is our means; and martyrdom in the way of Allah is our inspiration.'
Officially named a terrorist organization by the governments of Bahrain, Egypt, Russia, Syria, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (2014)

Why they might be annoying:

They provided the organizational blueprint for Hamas.
Their manifesto calls for a 'grand Jihad' in America.
A member and supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, Abd al-Majid Ahmad Hasan, assassinated Egyptian Prime Minister Mahmoud Al-Nuqrashi (1948).
They gave us Al-Qaeda leaders Saif al-Adel, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Osama Bin Laden (all started out as MB followers).
Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, perhaps the most bloodthirsty of Al Qaeda's Iraqi leadership, was never a member of the Brotherhood, but was reportedly pardoned by the King of Jordan as a gesture toward the organization.
They claim to represent the moderate wing of Islam, but their flag is of two crossed swords beneath an image of the Koran.
They inserted themselves into the Egyptian riots, alienating civilians calling for actual government reform.
They were accused of carrying out crucifixions of minority Christians during Morsi's presidency.
They have been accused of appropriating the Muslim Students Association (MSA) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for propaganda purposes through their nationwide chapters.
In 1973, the same MSA would set up a financial-holding company designed to control and promote Islamic centers, mosques, and assorted properties throughout the United States; the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT).
They published strategic documents detailing how they infiltrate societies and replace non-Islamic governmental systems with Shariah Law.
London-based MB representative Kamal El Helbawy went on record saying ‘Every night when I go to bed, I pray to wake up the next day to see Israel is wiped off the map.’
They were made out to be the biggest, baddest new terrorist group on the block, post-Arab Spring. And then ISIS came along...
Conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones work overtime to tie President Obama to him (such as claims that his older brother was a Muslim Brotherhood member; DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano having meetings with MB supporters, etc.).

Why they might not be annoying:

Ayaan Hirsi Ali was a former member.
The crucifixion reports were very likely a hoax.
They are the largest political opposition group in many Arab states.
They gave many Egyptian citizens their first opportunity for community and social activism.
They filled the void left by a weakened Egyptian government.
They gave Osama Bin Laden his walking papers when he insisted on joining the Soviet-Afghanistan conflict (the Saudi chapter was more focused on administering humanitarian aid).
They have been picked on by radical Jihadists for being 'too soft' on Western infidels.
Case in point, they condemned the 9/11 terrorist attacks, releasing a statement after the event calling them 'against all humanist and Islamic morals.'
Months after the assassination of Prime Minister Nukrashi Pasha, Hassan Al-Banna was assassinated for expressing his view that terrorism was not acceptable in the religion of Islam.
House Republicans wound up with egg on their faces when they made an attempt to tie Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin to the Brotherhood in 2012.
After the Brotherhood engaged in what they called 'ikhwaninzation' or 'Brotherhoodization,' the Egyptian populace turned against them and booted them from office so fast their heads spun.
An Egyptian court sentenced 529 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, including the recently ousted Morsi, to death; a verdict which Amnesty International called 'the largest single batch of simultaneous death sentences we've seen in recent years […] anywhere in the world.' (Mar. 24, 2014).
