Why he might be annoying:

He said: 'Know thyself? If I knew myself, I'd run away.'
    He wrote poetry.
In fact, his poetry was the model for a German poetic movement called Innerlichkeit (introversion), which was represented by poets like Heinrich Heine.
He practiced law in Wetzlar, Germany.
He was the chief advisor of Karl August, Duke of Saxe-Weimar.
Because of his prominence in literature (mainly German), he is widely quoted by many writers.
His work 'Faust' created the concept of 'selling one's soul to the Devil,' which became a metaphor for victory of technology and industrialism and its human cost (we are seeing this today unfortunately).

Why he might not be annoying:

He originated of many ideas that became familiar in the modern world.
His words inspired musical compositions from composers like Mozart and Beethoven.
He was a key figure in the transition of Enlightenment to Romanticism.
His closet drama 'Faust,' parts 1 and 2, was his masterpiece.
He had a friendship with Friedrich Schiller.
He fought against Napoleon in the Napoleonic Wars.
He studied in universities at both Leipzig and Strasbourg.
His discovery of human premaxilla jaw bones and early ideas on evolution inspired Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace to perfect the theory.
He said: 'Everything is simpler than you think and at the same time more complex than you imagine.'
He was fascinated with minerals and had a mineral named after him (goethite).
His poem 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' was successfully adapted by Walt Disney in his classic animated film 'Fantasia.'
