U.S. Senator

The Resume

    (August 24, 1947- )
    Born in Farmington, West Virginia
Member of the West Virginia House of Delegates (1982-84) and Senate (1986-96)
West Virginia Secretary of State (2001-05)
    Governor of West Virginia (2005-10)
Won the special election to fill the seat vacated when US Senator Robert Byrd died
Only Democratic Senator to vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court (October 6, 2018)

Why he might be annoying:

The head of the West Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club said ‘He’s been nothing but a mouthpiece for the coal industry his whole public life.’
He voted against the repeal of ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell.’
He is the last Democratic Senator to oppose same-sex marriage.
He voted to end federal funding of Planned Parenthood (2015), then voted to preserve funding for Planned Parenthood (2017).
He has called for a new ‘war on drugs’ against opioids, while his daughter is the CEO of a pharmaceutical company that produces opioids.
He claimed to have been targeted by ‘Big Pharma,’ even though he received $180,000 in campaign contributions from pharmaceutical firms.
As the state he represents has become increasingly conservative, he has gotten increasingly out of step with his fellow Democrats to maintain his electability.
He said he regretted voting for Hilary Clinton in 2016 and was open to supporting Donald Trump in 2020.

Why he might not be annoying:

He lettered in four sports in high school: football, basketball, baseball and track.
He has been married to Gayle Connelly for over 50 years.
He has complained about a ‘toxic’ lack of bipartisanship in Congress and said, ‘I know dysfunctional families that function better than the Senate does.’
During his first year as Senator, he met one-on-one with all 99 of his colleagues to get to know them better.
CBS News called him ‘about as centrist as a Senator can get.’
