Biblical Character

The Resume

    Born in Israel
Daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel
    Ruler of Judah (842-836 BC)
Killed by soldiers at the gates under orders from the priest Jehoiada

Why she might be annoying:

She encouraged her sons to follow her parents’ evil ways.
Upon the death of her son Ahaziah, she proceeded to massacre the entire royal family of Judah.
Her followers looted everything from God’s Temple and used them to worship Baal.
During Joash’s coronation, she ignored the treason she first committed and whined, ‘Treason! Treason!’
Some scholars thought that she was Ahab’s sister rather than his daughter.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was the only woman to rule Judah on her own.
She failed to kill her own grandson Joash, who was rescued by her daughter Jehosheba.
She inspired the tragedy ‘Athalie’ by Jean Racine.
George Frideric Handel composed a music based on her life (1733).
Her name is still used in modern-day Israel, albeit rarely.
