    Won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for ‘They Knew What They Wanted’ (1925)
    Nominated for the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Arrowsmith’ (1932) and ‘Dodsworth’ (1936)
    Won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939)
    Grandfather of actor Tony Goldwyn

Why he might be annoying:

    His plays are rarely revived.
    He received sole screen credit for ‘Gone with the Wind’ although four other writers revised his screenplay.
    He supported the Communist Party candidate for President (1932).

    He was an ambulance driver in France and the Balkans during World War I.
    He was proficient in foreign languages, translating plays from French, Spanish, German and Hungarian.
    He died on his farm when a two-ton tractor pinned him against a wall.
    He was the first posthumous winner of an Academy Award.
