Why he might be annoying:

He enrolled in a drama school in East Berlin, but was dismissed for a 'lack of talent.'
'The Invisible Visor' was basically propaganda for the Stasi (East German secret police).
He was filming 'Avalon' in the US when the Berlin Wall fell; his first thought on seeing news footage of it was, 'Hollywood must really be running out of material if they're now falling back on the German-German split.' The reality did not register until the next day, when people on the set began congratulating him.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a concert violinist in his teens.
He was blacklisted from East German movies and TV after protesting the government stripping singer Wolf Biermann of his citizenship while Biermann was on tour in West Germany (1976).
He was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for 'Shine.'
He received a three-minute standing ovation when he was presented with the Golden Camera for lifetime achievement at the Berlin Film Festival (2011).
