    She could be stern and sarcastic on camera.
    She openly argued with her husband and threw him out of the house in front of cameras.
    Her divorce from Bill Loud played out in a very public manner.

    She earned degrees in world history and English literature at Stanford.
    She was understanding and supportive when her son Lance came out as gay.
    Lance later died of Hepatitis C complications (2003).
    She was portrayed by Diane Lane in the film 'Cinema Veritas.'

    Her documented separation and subsequent divorce from her husband was revolutionary for the time and made her a feminist folk hero.
