Why they might be annoying:

They were accused of ripping off Santana's style.
Their name is a sometimes derogatory term used to describe Mexicans.
They were originally named The VIPs.
A legal argument broke out in the 1980s between Bobby Espinosa and Mickey Lespron over the ownership of the El Chicano name.
As a result, there was a temporary halt on the group's career and it led to the discontinuation of their association with Columbia Records.
Espinosa released an album in 1998 that was credited to the El Chicano name even though he was the only featured artist.

Why they might not be annoying:

Walfredo Reyes Jr. - of Santana and Chicago fame - recorded with the band from for two years.
Their debut hit, 'Viva Tirado,' did very well on Los Angeles radio and remained #1 locally for thirteen straight weeks.
'Viva Tirado' reached number 28 on Billboard's pop singles chart and number 20 on its R&B singles chart.
Their 1972 album's lead single, 'Brown Eyed Girl' peaked at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Chicanismo scholar Dionne Espinoza called their 'Brown Eyed Girl' cover 'an affirmation of the beauty of brown-skinned women.'
'Tell Her She's Lovely' reached number 40 on Billboard's pop singles chart and number 98 on the magazine's R&B singles chart.
While they never attained cataclysmic stardom, they were hugely popular in local Mexican-American neighborhoods (particularly Baby Boomers).
Several of their founding members have died, but they are still actively recording and touring.
