    (September 18, 1952- )

Coached Boston University (1978-83), Providence College (1985-87), New York Knicks (1987-89), University of Kentucky (1989-97) and Boston Celtics (1997-2001)
Led Kentucky to NCAA Championship (1996)
Led teams to NCAA Final Four (1987, 1993, 1996, 1997)
Played at the University of Massachusetts (1971-74)
    Wrote 'Success is a Choice'

Why he might be annoying:

He keeps switching between being a college hoops coach and a pro hoops coach.
    He has a short fuse.
When he was a player at UMass, he broke the starting point guard's finger during a fight, suspending him for the rest of the season.
He spent the night of his honeymoon being interviewed for an assistant coach position.
He admitted that he took the Celtics job more for the $50 million contract they gave him than for the team.
As a Celtics coach/president, he made foolish draft choices and gave mediocre players huge contracts.
After being booed during a Celtics loss, he ranted: 'Larry Bird is not walking through that door, fans. Kevin McHale is not walking through that door, and Robert Parish is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they're going to be gray and old.'
Many Kentucky Wildcats fans consider him a traitor for becoming the coach of the University of Louisville, their chief rival.

Why he might not be annoying:

He took a Kentucky team that was reeling from NCAA probation and made them a national power again.
He is the first coach to take three different teams to the Final Four.
Tubby Smith and Billy Donovan were assistant coaches under him who had their own coaching successes.
His son, Daniel, was just six months old when he died of heart failure (1987).
His best friend and brother-in-law, Bill Minardi, was killed in the World Trade Center during the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Despite his nomadic ways, he intends to finish his coaching career at Louisville.
