The Resume

    (April 29, 1936-June 13, 2005)
    Born in Memphis, Tennessee
    Walter Lane Smith III
Nathan Bates on V (1984) and Perry White on Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman
Films include ‘Rooster Cogburn,’ ‘Network (1976),’ ‘The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training,’ ‘Purple Hearts,’ ‘Places in the Heart,’ ‘Red Dawn,’ ‘Weeds (1987),’ ‘Air America,’ ‘My Cousin Vinny,’ ‘The Mighty Ducks,’ ‘Son-in-Law,’ and ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’
Died of Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in Northridge (Los Angeles) at age 69

Why he might be annoying:

He got his role in Air America based on his loose resemblance to Bob Dole (who was well over a decade older).
In addition to playing the Daily Planet editor, he played at least one other role that would later be played by Frank Langella (President Nixon).
He had the honor of a regular role in two busted series in the same year (Good Sports, Good & Evil, 1991).

Why he might not be annoying:

He spent two years in the United States Army.
It mattered little to him how divided people were over his portrayal of the disgraced Nixon (The Final Days, 1989); he saw it as his breakout role.
He did not marry until around age 50 (surviving his first wife and being survived by his second).
