Wrote the novels 'The Stranger,' 'The Plague,' 'The Fall,' 'The First Man,' the plays ' Caligula,' 'The Just Assassins,' and several works of collected philosophical essays

Why he might be annoying:

He was rarely seen without a cigarette.
He tried to enter the French army after World War II broke out, but he was rejected due to health problems.
He was a huge soccer fan and played goalie for his college's soccer team.
Despite the fact that he rejected the label of 'existentialist' his entire life, he is almost universally read as a leading figure in the existentialist movement.
His most famous essay, 'The Myth of Sisyphus,' begins with the lines 'There is only one really serious philosophical question, and that is suicide. Deciding whether or not life is worth living is to answer the fundamental question in philosophy. All other questions follow from that.'
He died in a car accident that some think was a suicide.

He was one of the leading figures of the French Resistance and edited the underground paper, 'Combat.'
He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957.
He was a good friend of Jean-Paul Sartre, but ended their friendship because of Sartre's support of Stalinism.
He strongly opposed capital punishment.
He was a fan of American pulp novels.
He held that we had to find our own meaning in life rather than rely on the dictates of a religion.
'The Stranger' is generally regarded as one of the greatest works of literature of the 20th century.
