The Resume

    (February 8, 1612-September 25, 1680)
Born in Strensham, England, United Kingdom
Best known for 'Hubridas' (1663-68), a satire on Puritanism

Why he might be annoying:

He wanted to be an artist, but one of his editors noted that his paintings were mostly used to board over windows and 'indeed they were not fit for much else.'
He repaid his patrons by satirizing them in his works.
The Encyclopedia Britannica described 'Hubridas' as part of 'the class of books which are more quoted than read.' (1911)
His most famous quote, 'Spare the rod and spoil the child,' is constantly misattributed to The Bible.

Why he might not be annoying:

Playwright/critic John Dennis called him 'a whole species of poets in one.'
'Hubridas' was so successful, it made the mock heroic epic the standard form for satire in English literature for several decades.
Voltaire said of 'Hubridas,' 'I never found so much wit in one single book.'
