The Resume

Mark D’Amico, Kate McClure, and Johnny Bobbitt
Residents of Burlington County, New Jersey
Concocted a GoFundMe Hoax in which girlfriend Kate claimed to have been stranded on I-95 in Philadelphia after her car ran out of gas (November 2017)
Claimed that homeless veteran Bobbitt spent his last $20 to buy her gas, prompting D’Amico and McClure to start a $10,000 GoFundMe to ‘pay it forward’ and help him get back on his feet (GoFundMe campaign raised over $400,000 ultimately)
Charged with wire fraud, money laundering, and theft by deception after a federal investigation (November 2018), all three pleaded guilty (2019 – 20)

Why he might be annoying:

The one guy’s name is John Bobbitt. Case closed.
They used a GoFundMe to manipulate people’s good will and make a quick buck.
Mark D’Amico openly bragged to friends about the story being ‘completely made up’ within an hour of its going viral.
Their feel-good story had way too many holes in it to be believable (e.g. not too many homeless guys camp out in the break-down lane of an interstate, nor do they usually have a spare twenty bucks to give to someone who would likely have had cash on-hand).
D’Amico and McClure blew through $360,000 on a luxury lifestyle at an alarming rate (they had less than $10,000 by the end of the next year).
Even after blowing most of the money on trips, Mark was convinced that the money they made on their book deal would ‘dwarf’ the loot from the GoFundMe campaign.
They shared only $75,000 of their donation funds with Bobbitt, prompting him to (stupidly) sue the couple, drawing attention to the fraud and setting off a federal investigation that exposed the scam.
Mark is abusive and, in leaked audio, could be heard physically striking Kate during an argument over the investigation

Why he might not be annoying:

They are proof positive that GoFundMe is vulnerable to scam artists.
They likely would have gotten away with the scam if they hadn’t turned on each other.
Bobbitt really was a Marine Corps veteran (so at least it’s not a stolen valor case).
Kate McClure claimed to have had genuine intentions to help Bobbitt initially.
Kate also reportedly cautioned Mark to slow down with the money but was ignored.
Mark and Kate were interviewed by a gullible Megyn Kelly days before the investigation broke out, providing yet one more nail in the coffin for her ill-fated morning talk show.
