U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (December 7, 1976- )
    Born in San Diego, California
Succeeded his father as Representative from California’s 52nd District (January 3, 2009)
After redistricting, represented California’s 50th District
    Republican

Why he might be annoying:

Former House Speaker John Boehner warned him and a group of fellow young Representatives – informally dubbed ‘the bro caucus’ – about their heavy drinking and being seen out at night with female lobbyists.
He opposed repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and letting gays and lesbians serve openly in the military.
He advocates using nuclear weapons if a war breaks out with Iran.
He said, ‘Thousands of people die every year of cold, so if we had global warming it would save lives,’ conveniently ignoring the people who die every year from overheating.
He puffed on an electronic cigarette during a committee hearing to underline his opposition to a federal ban on vaping on airplanes (2016).
When Rep. Greg Gianforte reportedly bodyslammed a reporter from the Guardian, he responded, ‘It’s not appropriate behavior. Unless the reporter deserved it.’ (2017)
He and his wife were indicted on 60 counts of wire fraud, falsifying records, campaign law violations, and conspiracy, for spending an estimated $250,000 of campaign funds on personal expenses (August 21, 2018).
Probably the most unusual of the expenses: paying $600 to transport a pet rabbit by plane.
He inevitably claimed the indictment was a ‘political witch hunt’ even though the local US Attorney’s office is headed by a Trump appointee.

Why he might not be annoying:

He started a web design firm during his sophomore year in college.
The day after the 9/11 attacks, he quit his job and joined the Marine Corps.
He served two terms of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.
He was the first veteran of the War on Terror to serve in Congress.
He inadvertently summed up Donald Trump’s appeal to the Republican Party when he told a Young Republicans group, ‘He’s an asshole, but he’s our asshole.’
He sold his house – with his wife and three kids moving in with his father – to raise $60,000 to reimburse his political campaign for personal expenses ‘inadvertently’ charged to it (2016).
