Why he might not be annoying:

He almost drowned while attempting the Houdini Water Torture cell due to a malfunctioning winch. The winch was to lower him in the water which caused it to operate at half speed.
By all accounts he was an extremely nice, peaceful guy.
Instead of Top hats and tails he wore psychedelic outfits that fit the attitude of the time.
He rejected the traditional magician style and became the first 'cool' magician.
His magic was exciting.
He inspired David Copperfield, David Blaine and Criss Angel to continue their pursuit of magic.
He was married to Debbie Doulliard for 19 years (until his death).
He died of liver cancer.
