She said she began writing her own songs because it was easier than learning how to play other people's songs correctly.
She was the first singer to popularize the mawkish 'From A Distance.'
She usually wears vintage political buttons while performing.
She mass mailed a letter to newspapers complaining about what she called 'years of brutal abusive reviews.' (1998)
She blamed the George W. Bush administration for causing five years of writer's block (2004-09).

AllMusic wrote that she 'has the kind of beguiling singing voice that's effortless and casually beautiful -- like a pretty girl who doesn't need makeup to be radiant.'
Many of her songs were inspired by her high school boyfriend, who died in a motorcycle accident after taking her to the prom.
She survived breast cancer and thyroid cancer in the 1990s.
She is a supporter of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation.
Her songs became country hits for Kathy Mattea ('Love at the Five and Dime') and Suzy Bogguss ('Outbound Plane').
