    Sheriff of Vanderburgh County (January 6, 1999 – January 3, 2007)

Why he might be annoying:

    As a representative of a conservative district he identified as both anti-abortion and anti-gun control.
    He vacated his House seat to be the Democratic candidate for a seat in the Senate.
    He benefited from Evan Bayh announcing that he was vacating his Senate seat the day before the primary filing deadline, resulting in the DNC choosing him because no other candidate could reach the number of signatures required in such a short amount of time.
    He was defeated by former Senator Dan Coats by a wide margin over the fifty percent mark.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He worked in the paint and hardware department at Sears to pay for college.
    He was twice decorated for heroism in the line of duty in the Sheriff’s department.
    Before becoming Sheriff, he instituted the first Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
    He beat out six-term Republican incumbent John Hostettler for his House seat in the 2006 midterm elections.
    Although pro-life, he condemned the National Right to Life Committee for not supporting a bill to extend the State Children's Health Insurance Program to cover more families.
    He gave up on a promising Congressional career and lost out due to bad timing.
