Wrote the memoir 'Laughing Matters: On Writing M*A*S*H, Tootsie, Oh God and a Few Other Funny Things' (1997)

Why he might be annoying:

He got his start when his father, a barber in Beberly Hills, boasted about his talents to a customer, Danny Thomas.
His first Broadway musical, The Conquering Hero, closed after eight performances (1961).
After having 'creative differences' with Dustin Hoffman during the filming of 'Tootsie,' he said 'Never work with an Oscar winner who is smaller than the statue.'

He was the subject of an internet death hoax on the alt.obituaries board (2008).
