Why he might be annoying:

He got his start writing for Roger Corman's bad exploitation films.
He is good friends with Tom Cruise.
He frequently co-writes scripts with Warren Beatty.
He removed his writing credit for 'Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes' in protest and substituted it with P.H. Vazak, the name of his dog.
This lead to the dog receiving an Oscar nomination for the script.
Though an accomplished and talented screenwriter, his most recent work is mostly on Jerry Bruckheimer action movies.
His 'Chinatown' trilogy will probably never be made.

He wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for 'Chinatown (1974),' considered to be one of the greatest film noirs ever made.
He is a long-time friend of Jack Nicholson, whom he met while attending acting classes.
He is known as a skilled script doctor.
He is uncredited for scenes he wrote in 'Bonnie and Clyde (1967)' and 'The Godfather (1972).'
