Why he might be annoying:

He ran away from home at age 14.
In their pre-'King Kong' pseudo-documentaries, he and Cooper filmed the actual shooting of tigers and leopards.
For 'Chang,' he and Cooper tied up and distressed a baby elephant to get footage of the mother charging through the jungle to the rescue.
He directed the prologue of 'This Is Cinerama' (1952) but went uncredited.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War I.
He worked with the Red Cross in assisting refugees of the Soviet-Polish War (1920) and the Greco-Turkish War (1921-22).
He was almost trampled by stampeding elephants while filming 'Chang.'
He said that in editing 'King Kong,' he kept the story moving at a fast pace so audiences would not have time to consider how implausible much of the story was.
His film career was cut short due to eye injuries he suffered when he dropped his face mask while conducting high-altitude tests of photographic equipment for the military during World War II.
His wife Ruth Rose died on his birthday after fifty years of marriage (1978).
