She won Miss Universe only after a triple tie-break.
The sponsor thought her hips were 'fitter' than those of the first runner-up, Brazilian Martha Rocha.
Decades later, Brazilian pageant fans are still bitter because Martha was thought to possess the more gorgeous face of the two women.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was the first delegate from the States to win the Miss Universe crown.
She was also a finalist at the 1953 Miss America pageant.
As a consolation prize, Martha was given Miriam's Miss USA car.
