Why he might be annoying:

During his early race days when he had little money, he would often get to the next event by siphoning gas from cars in the parking lot.
The day after his 1981 Indy 500 victory, he was stripped of the title for having passed eight cars during a caution period, and Mario Andretti was named the winner.
It required a protest by Team Penske and five months of court battles to have Unser confirmed as the winner.
He then retired, saying the controversy had made him disillusioned with motor sports.
He was arrested for battery after shoving a police officer who had pulled him over for speeding (1994)
He has been married four times, divorced three times.
He is so competitive that when he heard that A.J. Foyt had shot an 11-foot tall polar bear, he chartered a trip to Alaska so he could shoot an 11-1/2 foot bear.

Why he might not be annoying:

He came alarmingly close to being decapitated when his car slid under a guardrail during a race in Phoenix (1965).
He won the Indy 500 in three different decades, for three different teams.
Andretti had passed two cars under caution during the 1981 Indy 500, so it is hard to grasp the logic that would disqualify Unser but not Andretti as well.
In addition to his Indy wins, he won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb a record 13 times.
He developed and tested a number of tire designs for Goodyear.
