    He kept two mistresses.
    He had three children out of wedlock.
    He was addicted to laudanum.

    His books 'The Woman in White' and 'The Moonstone' are considered to be forerunners of mystery fiction.
    He was a good friend of Charles Dickens.
    He was one of the most popular and highest paid writers of the Victorian era.
    He suffered from gout (which is why he started taking laudanum in the first place).
    He suffered from an eye disease and, in later life, wrote by dictating his words to a secretary.
