    Birth name was Mykola Gogol
    Resided in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Rome, Italy
    Wrote ‘Diary of a Madman (1835),' ‘The Inspector General (1836),' ‘Dead Souls (1842)' and ‘The Overcoat (1842)'

Why he might be annoying:

    He had to flee Russia after pissing off the Czar.
    He was uptight about sex.
    His own homosexuality was closeted.
    He became a religious maniac.
    When a priest told him to burn the unpublished second volume of his masterpiece ‘Dead Souls,' he did.

Why he might not be annoying:

    After burning his book, he refused to eat, and died about a week later.
    Some believe he was actually buried alive.
    His stories are witty and playful (especially for a Russian writer).
    He satirized the choking Russian bureaucracy.
    Mel Brooks is a huge fan.
    A character in the James Bond series was named after him.
    The censors forced him to remove the Russian word for ‘nostril' from a novel, because it was similar to the Russian word for ‘cunt.'
