Why he might be annoying:

As pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church, he pissed off some members of his parish by putting the civil rights movement at a higher priority than his pastoral duties.
In 2004, he angered the gay community by refusing to support a repeal of Cincinnati's anti-gay ordinance.
He criticized GLAAD for calling gay rights a civil rights issue, stating 'Homosexuality is a sin. The color of a man's skin is not a sin, it is who he is. Thus, gays have no place in the civil rights movement.'
Some black civil rights groups were upset by his refusal to support affirmative action.

Why he might not be annoying:

He survived more attempts on his life than any African American civil rights leader.
Coretta Scott King said that her husband 'owed much of his courage to Reverend Shuttlesworth.'
After being attacked by the KKK in 1956, he said 'the Lord put me in a hard city, so he gave me a hard head.'
At a time when many civil rights leaders were scared off by violent attacks, he stood strong and endured many severe and near death injuries.
