Why he might be annoying:

As one internet commentator noted, he made 'Grimace, the Hamburglar, and the rest of the McDonaldland bunch seem positively normal by comparison. Well, a little more normal, at least.'
He wore sunglasses at night. (Maybe he was a Corey Hart fan.)
He usually sang 'Mack the Knife,' with the lyrics changed from being about an unrepentant murderer to being about eating a McDonalds.
McDonalds was sued by the estate of singer Bobby Darin, which claimed that Mac Tonight had copied Darin's performance style.
He inspired the white supremacist 'Moon Man' meme.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was originally only used in ads in Southern California, but proved so successful that McDonalds took the campaign national within a year.
An Ad Watch survey found that his commercials produced the highest consumer recall of 1987 TV ads.
He was featured in a line of Happy Meal toys.
The Darin estate withdrew its lawsuit before the case went to trial.
He was featured on the car of NASCAR driver <19690>Bill Elliott<19690> when McDonalds sponsored him (1997-98).
