He was fined after he encouraged his players to start a brawl in a game against the Boston Bruins (1981).
He got into an altercation with a fan at a bar in Pittsburgh, which led to him receiving a black eye and a broken nose (1983).
He was twice married and divorced.

He was initially a scrapper who wasn't afraid to stick up for his teammates.
He guided the North Stars to the franchise's first berth in the Stanley Cup Finals.
He was sober for over 30 years at the time of his death.
