    Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
    Head coach for the Detroit Red Wings (1947-1954) and the Chicago Black Hawks (1956-1957)
    General Manager of the Chicago Black Hawks (1954-1977)
    Inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame (1974)
    Won the Lester Patrick Award (1975)
    He never played hockey in the professional level.
    His playing career was cut short due to a facial injury as an amateur player.
    He coached the Red Wings to two straight Stanley Cup Finals losses in his first two years with the team.
    He failed to repeat his success from the Red Wings as the head coach of the Black Hawks.
    The Black Hawks lost in three Stanley Cup appearances under his tenure as the team's GM (1962, 1965 and 1971).
    He first discovered the talent of Gordie Howe before he joined the Red Wings.
    He coached the Red Wings to three Stanley Cup Final victories (1950, 1952 and 1954) out of five appearances.
    He was also the architect of the Black Hawk team that won the 1961 Stanley Cup.
    Under his tenure as the Red Wings' head coach, the team never missed the Stanley Cup playoffs.
    He was the namesake of an award for the CHL's most valuable player.
    He was in charge of the organizing of the 1979-80 Olympic Hockey Festival which led to the formation of the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team that won the Gold Medal at the 1980 Olympics.
    He was also in charge of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame selections.
    He was considered as one of the NHL's 10 all-time best head coaches and 10 all-time best GMs according to Stan Fischler's book 'Hockey's 100.'
