Committed suicide by jumping from her seventh floor apartment
Why she might be annoying
She was married and divorced three times, with her last two marriages lasting less than two years each.
She was Mao Zedong’s mistress.
She allegedly haunts the apartment whose window she jumped out of. (Neighbors claim that in autumn her favorite scents, ylang-ylang and neroli oil, can be smelled in the hallway outside her door.)
Why she might not be annoying
She and her family fled for Shanghai after the Japanese army attacked her hometown and her sister was killed in a bombing raid.
She underwent operations for breast cancer and a brain tumor in the two years before her death.
Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, used the Cultural Revolution to harass her in revenge for her affair.
She was badly beaten by Qing’s followers.
