The Resume

    (March 14, 1926-March 14, 2020)
    Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana
    Birth name was Philip Baptiste
Recorded the single ‘Sea of Love’ (1959)

Why he might be annoying:

He chose a repetitive stage name.
    He was a one-hit wonder.
He wrote ‘Sea of Love’ to impress a girl he was dating. It apparently didn’t work, since they broke up.

Why he might not be annoying:

‘Sea of Love’ hit #2 on the Billboard pop chart and #1 on the R&B chart.
’Sea of Love’ returned to the Top 40 in cover versions by Del Shannon (1982) and the Honeydrippers (1984).
His original version of ‘Sea of Love’ was prominently featured in the Al Pacino-Ellen Barkin thriller of the same name (1989).
He was screwed out of writing and performance royalties, earning only $6,800 for a million-selling standard.
