    Brother of actor Richard Mulligan
Directed episodes of 'Suspense,' 'Playhouse 90,' 'Philco Television Playhouse,' 'Armstrong Circle Theater,' 'United States Steel Hour,' and 'Studio One in Hollywood'

Why he might be annoying:

He told a critic, 'I don't know anything about 'the Mulligan style.' If you can find it, well, that's your job.'
James Caan called Mulligan the most incompetent director he ever worked with, and experience on 'Kiss Me Goodbye' was why he made no films for the next five years.
He used the Alan Smithee pseudonym to protest edits in the airline version of 'The Man in the Moon.'
His daughter Beth said his alcoholism made their home life 'chaotic and frightening.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a radio operator with the Marine Corps during World War I.
He won an Emmy for directing the TV movie adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's 'The Moon and Sixpence.' (1959)
Francois Truffaut praised his work on 'Fear Strikes Out,' writing, 'It is rare to see a first film so free of faults and bombast.'
He made a compelling film of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' despite studio concerns that 'There's no romance, no violence (except off-screen). There's no action. What is there? Where's the story?'
