He was also rejected by the Navy for having flat feet.
He smoked tobacco and cigars prior to being in his 70s.
He was underage, but told the Army that the only record of his birth was in a family Bible that he refused to bring to the recruiting station.
He bristles at people saying he lied about his age, claiming 'I didn't lie - nobody calls me a liar.'

He was an ambulance driver for wounded soldiers.
He was rescued as a prisoner of war in Japan during World War II (February 23, 1945).
He outlived 4,734,990 of the World War I U.S. military personnel.
He is the last living World War I U.S. soldier under the term 'doughboy.'
He was at a World War I unveiling exhibit at the Pentagon on the same day he was honored by George W. Bush at the White House.
He was married to Audrey Mayo for 53 years until her death.
He still drove a car at age 102 and a tractor at 104.
He recorded his memories for the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project.
