Why they might be annoying:

They have a lame band name.
They started out as a backup band.
They abused drugs and alcohol, with two of them dying as a result.
There was tension between Robertson and the rest of the members, since he got most of the attention and held the copyright of most of the songs.
They reformed and toured without Robertson in the 1980's and 1990's.
They covered 'Georgia on My Mind' for Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign.
'The Weight' was used for a Cingular Wireless commercial.

Why they might not be annoying:

Their 'country rock' sound helped pave the way for groups such as the Eagles.
They were so influential that Eric Clapton asked if he could be a part of the group.
They were Bob Dylan's backup group when he made the transition from folk to rock.
All of them (except Robertson) played multiple instruments on their albums.
'The Weight' was used in the classic movie 'Easy Rider.'
Robertson went on to have a successful solo career.
They were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (1989) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1993).
Their farewell concert had many guest musicians and was documented by the Martin Scorsese film 'The Last Waltz,' considered by many the best concert film ever made.
