Best known as Mama on ‘What’s Happening!! (1976-1978)
Acted in ‘The Wiz (1978),’ ‘Fantasy Island (1978-1981),’ ‘The Jerk (1979),’ ‘The Jerk, Too (1984),’ ‘The Jeffersons (1984),’ ‘Tales from the Darkside (1986)’ and ‘Scrooged (1988)’

Why she might be annoying:

Her given name was ‘Donnie.’
She was grossly obese.
She was a heavy smoker.
She refused to come back for the (pitiful) reunion series ‘What’s Happening Now!’
She angered many African-Americans by supporting Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaigns.

She lost both legs and an arm to diabetes.
Late in life, paramedics dropped her, knocking out her teeth.
She suffered strokes during her last years.
She kept a good attitude, even through her many medical problems.
Her only son was a drug addict who leeched money from her.
He died three years before she did.
She is warmly remembered for her role on ‘What’s Happening!!’
She notably portrayed the witch in the stage and film versions of ‘The Wiz.’
She reportedly made an excellent macaroni pie.
