Why he might be annoying:

He ran away from home to join a circus.
He was dictatorial on his film sets, and most actors disliked working with him.
He received two Academy Award nominations for Best Director in 1938, but didn't win the award.
Several extras drowned during the filming of 'Noah's Ark' because he didn't tell them they were going to be drenched with water in order to get a genuine look of panic from them.
His English was terrible.
While making 'Casablanca,' he told the studio head 'the scenario isn't the exact truth, but we have the facts to prove it.'

Why he might not be annoying:

David Niven named his autobiography 'Bring On the Empty Horses' as a reference to a story about him.
When the early rushes of 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' proved dull, he replaced the original director and turned out one of the greatest adventure films of all time.
'Casablanca' turned out to be a major classic despite being rewritten on the set every day during filming.
