The Resume

    (January 8, 1899-October 27, 1986)
    Born in East Dover, Vermont
Birth name was Llewelyn Sherman Adams
    2nd White House Chief of Staff (January 20, 1953 – October 7, 1958)
    Governor of New Hampshire (January 6, 1949 – January 1, 1953)
    Represented New Hampshire's 2nd district in the U.S. House of Representatives (January 3, 1945 – January 3, 1947)
    Republican
Author of 'First-Hand Report: The Story of the Eisenhower Administration (1961)'

Why he might be annoying:

He lost his first run for governor during his first House term.
He spoke with a clipped New Hampshire twang.
Michael Medved called him a shadow President for the control he wielded in the Eisenhower White House.
His power was such an open secret that two Democrats were once allegedly heard joking 'Wouldn't it be terrible if Eisenhower died and Nixon became President?' with the other cracking 'Wouldn't it be terrible if Sherman Adams died and Eisenhower became President!'
He accepted gifts from a donor who was under FTC investigation at the time, leading to a House Subcommittee inquiry and his eventual resignation.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served during World War I in the United States Marine Corps.
As New Hampshire governor, he called for state fund solvency and balanced budged.
Although the Republican poster guy for fiscal conservatism, he did promote legislation creating insurance programs to protect the elderly.
He was Eisenhower's 1952 campaign manager and almost single-handedly orchestrated his win on the convention floor.
Although technically the second, he was the first person to hold the explicit title of 'Chief of Staff.'
He was essential to President Eisenhower's handling of partisan threats like Joseph McCarthy.
When he returned to his home in Lincoln, New Hampshire, he started Loon Mountain Corporation, which has remained a major ski resort.
