Military Personnel

The Resume

    (circa 1732-February 26, 1795)
    Born in Winyah, South Carolina
Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army and Brigadier General in the South Carolina militia during the American Revolution
Considered one of the fathers of guerrilla warfare
    Nicknamed 'the Swamp Fox'
Loosely inspired Mel Gibson's character in 'The Patriot'

Why he might be annoying:

    He owned slaves.
A British historian called him 'a racist who hunted Indians for sport.'
He broke his ankle escaping from a party by jumping out of a second-story window (1780).
    He married his cousin.

Why he might not be annoying:

During a voyage to the West Indies, his ship sank (reportedly after being rammed by a whale), and he spent a week adrift in a lifeboat before reaching shore.
Thanks to his broken ankle, he was not in Charleston when the British captured the city, enabling him to continue the fight.
Despite being outnumbered, he used surprise attacks with great success.
After the Revolution, he helped write South Carolina's state constitution.
He opposed punishing Loyalists who had supported the British during the war.
