He became an alcoholic at age 13.
During a party celebrating the Yankees clinching the 1957 pennant, he knocked a cigar out of the mouth of coach Ralph Houk, who decked him.
He was fined $250 for giving the choke sign to an umpire during the 1958 World Series.
He tried to kill himself three times.
He burnt down his house when he fell asleep while smoking.
He fell asleep at the wheel and hit another car.

He had a blazing fastball.
He deliberately threw warm-up pitches over his catcher's head to cultivate a wild-man reputation and intimidate batters.
During the 1958 World Series, he saved Game 5 and won Game 6, with 14 strikeouts in nine innings of relief.
He went to rehab and became the director of a hospital alcohol rehabilitation program.
He was presented with the Yankee Family Award for his services an alcohol abuse counselor (1983).
He was the namesake for Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.
